John O'Groats Consultation Closing

Visitors have had the final say this week in a consultation process into the future of one of the UK's best known tourist locations - John O'Groats.

As the public part of the process draws to a close, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Consultants GVA Grimley are delighted at the level of interest and enthusiasm for change it has inspired.

The three month consultation has involved community groups, tourists to John O'Groats, businesses, public agencies and politicians. GVA Grimley is now sifting through and analysing all the information to create a masterplan which is set to be published by the beginning of September.

At a recent public exhibition at the village's Seaview Hotel the team met with over 160 people who came to offer their views on what the iconic location should offer.

Carol Gunn, Head of Transformational Projects at Highlands & Islands Enterprise, Thurso said: "It is an indication of how important John O’Groats is to the local economy that it has generated so much interest and debate. At the public session people took time to look at a range of emerging options and to offer detailed feedback."

She believes the role of the community is vital in the re-generation of the area: "The completion of the masterplan will be a first step in a phased development of the area and successful implementation will involve a range of stakeholders including businesses and the public sector. HIE is keen to work with partners to ensure that the strengths of the area are built upon and that John O' Groats continually moves forward to meet the needs of the modern day discerning traveller."

GVA Grimley's objective has been to explore what John O'Groats offers now, and how potential options could be developed including food & retail, accommodation, public art, an education or visitor centre, coastal walks, renewable energy options and many other possibilities.

Paul Rounce, GVA Grimley, said: "It has been a vital part of the process to hear local views on a number of initial options. As well as what any development might look like we have been discussing issues around planning, procedures and securing investment. The team was very encouraged by the level of enthusiasm expressed by those people that attended."

John Green, Chairman of Dunnet & Cannisby Community Council believes local people are optimistic that the masterplan will lead to phased improvements for John O'Groats over a period of time.
