The £5.2m project for the refurbishment of Dollan Aqua Centre, a leading public leisure facility in East Kilbride, has been awarded to Clark Contracts by South Lanarkshire Council.
Work will start in July with the centre scheduled to open to the public in January 2011, after completion of the works by Paisley based Clark Contracts.
Refurbishment of this A listed facility includes major structural works, new floor, wall and ceiling finishes, mechanical and electrical services and an environmental clean.
The overall repair and refurbishment of the centre has been supported by £500,000 of funding from Sportscotland.
David Cooper, Construction Director, Clark Contracts said: "We are delighted to be involved in the refurbishment of such an important leisure facility for the people of East Kilbride. In responding to this tender, we believe we offered an ideal blend of directly relevant experience, a previous track record with the Council itself and above all, great value."
Before closing for refurbishment, the Dollan Aqua Centre was used by 7,000 customers a week and is one of only five 50m competition pools in Scotland.
First opened in 1968, the centre features a vaulted 324ft parabolic arched roof.
In 1993, it was listed as one of sixty key monuments in Scottish post-war architecture and in 2002, it was designated as a category A listed building by Historic Scotland.
It will be one of the key venues for the 2011 Children's Games in Lanarkshire. Clark Contracts offers extensive experience in the construction, maintenance and refurbishment of large public sector buildings. This includes several high profile projects for South Lanarkshire Council and the recent refurbishment of Castlemilk Swimming Pool in Glasgow for Glasgow City Council.
Founded in 1978, Clark Contracts has grown to employ over 200 staff at offices in Paisley, covering the West of Scotland, and Edinburgh, covering the East. Around 80% of the company's work is repeat business and six out of ten is from customers who have worked with Clark Contracts for five years or more.
