£4.5m Restaurant Opens In Edinburgh Unesco World Heritage Site

Construction News Image
A new £4.5m restaurant with four rooms named 21212 has opened in the Unesco World Heritage site of Edinburgh.

Owned by Michelin starred chef Paul Kitching and his partner Katie O'Brien the property is a complete four-storey Georgian townhouse located on Royal Terrace, one of the cities smartest crescents just five minutes from the city centre.

The overall design philosophy for Glasgow based Burns Design, the company who completed the refurbishment project to a schedule of just over eight months, was to provide a scheme which was sympathetic to the core historical nature of the building. The property retains many of its original features from its entrance hall through to detailed cornicing, window casings, deep skirtings and timber moldings, whilst using the elegance of the Georgian property as a backdrop to add contemporary flourishes and design innovations.

One design feature prevalent throughout the property from first stepping foot in the foyer to all levels of the property is the use of Brinton's hard woven and durable carpets featuring the Timorous Beasties moth design in black and white. The foyer itself is an inviting space consisting of a mix of Keope Italian stone floor and carpet contrasting with a bold contemporary red reception desk and Flos lighting.

The restaurant, the hub of the building, is located on the ground floor and accommodates up to 38 diners. It's a long elegant room and its main feature is the glass partitioned division with a Corian counter created between the kitchen and restaurant to specifically allow customers to see the drama of their meal being prepared. Walls are dressed using a mix of fabrics in light browns and creams by Harlequin and wallpaper by Ralph Lauren.

The first floor, which is reached by a wide and sweeping staircase with ornate metalwork provides access to the drawing room, washrooms and private dining room. The drawing room has the dual purpose of being a residents lounge and offering a bar facility.

In contrast the private dining area, which can accommodate up to 12 persons, has been designed to be distinctly different feel to the restaurant. The dining room, which looks out over the hotel's gardens features vivid red Italian bespoke chairs and Diffuse lighting and is dominated once again by another original marble fireplace and Georgian cornice features.

There are also four spacious luxury bedrooms with ensuite facilities, which occupy the third floor and fourth floor attic space of the property.
