New £3.3m Developments For Musselburgh

Approval has been given for the construction of a new stableblock for Musselburgh racecourse and for new purpose-built accommodation for the East Lothian Council's Outdoor Education service.

The new stableblock will replace the existing stables at Goosegreen and Millhill and be located within the racecourse grounds.

The existing stables no longer meet the Horseracing Regulatory Authority minimum standards and are in a residential area with associated traffic concerns which can place stresses on horses on race days.

As part of the same construction contract as the new stableblock, but built on a separate location at Musselburgh lagoons, will be a new purpose-built facility for the Council's Outdoor education service. The service was previously located at Prestonpans Primary School but had to relocate due to space pressures at the school. The new facility will house the outdoor education staff, administrative support, offices and meeting rooms.

Cabinet member for Community services, Cllr Stuart Currie, said: "The racecourse continues to enjoy record numbers of visitors and plays an important role in the local economy.

"The new stableblock will not only provide a safer environment for the horses on racedays but will also greatly reduce safety concerns during transportation of the horses."

Speaking about the new Outdoor Education service Cllr Currie added: "The new facility to be built by Musselburgh lagoons will be purpose-built accommodation in a setting that truly inspires environmental awareness and appreciation. These new developments will, I believe, enhance the town of Musselburgh for years to come."
