New measures proposed by the government to reform the way it invests in affordable social housing have been given a qualified welcome by Angus Council's neighbourhood services committee.

The council's neighbourhood services committee noted the publication of the Scottish Government's paper "Investing in Affordable Housing: a Consultation" at their recent meeting.

The proposals seek to move away from the current position where a large number of registered social landlords (RSLs) often deliver new affordable housing in the same geographical area. They propose instead to have a system of lead developers in each area from amongst the RSLs, and these lead developers would receive the majority of the investment.


Convener of Neighbourhood Services Jim Millar said: "These proposals are of considerable interest but we will need to study the detail of agreeing investment priorities at regional level to ensure that there is no disadvantage to our own housing strategy in Angus.

"We are aware that our Housing Association partners have very real concerns about this consultation and we are working with them to understand their concerns."

Mr Millar said they will promote a sensible solution which protect local businesses and keeps Angus working.
