The Gaiety Theatre in Ayr has been closed to the public in order to protect and preserve the unique building while a decision is taken about the theatre's future.
The theatre was closed on 31 January 2009 by South Ayrshire Council.
Councillor Hugh Hunter, the Leader of South Ayrshire Council said: "The Council is responsible for the Gaiety Theatre even though it is currently closed, and will be looking after the building to ensure that it remains secure.
"Very importantly the interior of the Gaiety Theatre, which is Listed, needs to be protected and preserved."
Cllr Hunter said with no employees working within the theatre special arrangements have been made by the Council's Property and Design team, to manage and maintain the building.
"The Gaiety theatre already has an alarm system fitted, however, as an extra precaution shutters have been placed on most of the doors and windows," he commented.
Council employees will continue to care for the theatre by regularly checking the exterior of the building several times a week.
The historic Listed theatre auditorium will also be monitored by employees so that the theatre does not deteriorate.
While the theatre is closed officers of the council will continue to examine options regarding the Gaiety Theatre.
A report will be prepared by the Officers for the consideration of Elected Members who will consider it at a future meeting.
