State-Of-The-Art School Gets Royal Seal Of Approval

HRH The Princess Royal has officially opened the new Inverclyde Academy in Greenock.

The Princess was taken on a tour of the new £29m school by Head Teacher Catherine Sorensen and Inverclyde Council's Head of Schools Estates Tom Reid.

The design of the building is being held as an example of best practice for other councils by the Scottish Government and is the latest in a series of new-build schools provided by Inverclyde Council from Prudential borrowing.

The Princess was shown the state-of-the-art fitness room complete with exercise machines and plasma screens, the two gyms and games hall.

Head Girl Alexis Scott and Head Boy Lee Oribine were introduced before the Her Royal Highness moved on to the Home Economics Room and recording studio.

The Official Opening Ceremony took place in the school's Assembly Hall on 20 February where the Princess was welcomed by Councillor Iain McKenzie, Convener of Education and Lifelong Learning. He said: "We are thrilled that HRH the Princess Royal has taken time to visit Inverclyde again. This is a time of great momentum for education in Inverclyde, and this fantastic school is a measure of how far we have come.

"Just recently, the Prime Minister opened the new Newark Primary in Port Glasgow, and we will shortly be opening the new Rainbow Family Centre. Two new primary schools have also begun on site, with construction work due to begin on two new secondary schools later this year. We have our school estate team under Tom Reid to thank for the speed of progress in delivering these first class education facilities."

After a performance from Inverclyde Academy Concert Band and the School Choir, the Princess was invited to unveil a commemorative plaque. She said: "I am delighted to be here. Inverclyde Academy reflects all that is possible in education. The right environment encourages everyone and stretches them in every way.

"I'd like to congratulate all involved. This is a real achievement and I am sure you are very pleased with the result."

HRH the Princess Royal also visited the Inverclyde Centre for Independent Living earlier today, where she met with staff and service users.
