Over 80 secondary school pupils have visited the site of the new Motherwell College following a unique partnership set up between leading contractor Miller Construction (UK) Ltd and Motherwell College.
The College which has close working relationships with schools in the North Lanarkshire area approached Miller, the main contractor of the new £70m Motherwell College campus, with regard to giving pupils an insight into careers within the construction industry and site tours of the new facilities.
Pupils from St Aidan’s High School; Airdrie Academy, Clyde Valley High and Dalziel High were invited to attend a series of open days which ran over a 10 week period. The format of the day included an overview of the construction industry and the careers available; health and safety briefing; how a project develops from conception to completion and culminated in a tour of the site.
Speaking about the visits and the partnership, John Downey, Project Manager, Miller Construction, said: "Many of the pupils who visited site are participating in 'Skills for Work Construction' qualifications which the College runs in local schools and to be able to offer them practical experience of a site has proved to be very beneficial.
"A number of the students who were considering careers in the industry have now decided that this is the profession for them. It has been a pleasure for us to host the students and extend the working relationship that we have with the College to their local school network."
Hugh Logan, Principal and Chief Executive, Motherwell College, said he was proud of the relationships, both with the schools and Miller Construction.
The partnership between Miller Construction, Motherwell College and the Schools was marked by a celebratory lunch at the College attended by representatives from the partnership and North Lanarkshire Council.
