Projects key to Fife's long term economic success have been identified in Scotland's new planning blueprint.

National Planning Framework 2 is currently progressing through the Scottish Parliament and sets out Scotland's main planning and land use issues and a vision for Scotland to 2030.

It lists the 12 most important developments for Scotland's economic development; that strengthen transport links around Scotland and to the rest of the world, and projects that make a significant contribution to tackling climate change.

Three of these projects are in the Kingdom: the new Forth crossing, Rosyth International Container Terminal and new capacity at Longannet power station.

Councillor John Beare, chair of the planning committee said: "The Scottish Government's vision for the country is wide ranging and definitely won't pass us by in Fife. With key priorities located in the Kingdom it sets us firmly in the spotlight.


"A new Forth crossing and Rosyth as the national gateway to the continent are already key drivers in our planning, economic development and transport strategies so with national support and recognition we can continue to pursue and reap the benefits each of these projects will bring to Fife."

As the proposed planning blueprint suggest new non-nuclear baseload capacity at existing power stations, the council will continue discussions with Scottish Power on projects which will support and prolong the life of the facility at Longannet.

"We have a great opportunity to maximise the positive outcomes for Fife from the national planning framework as it reaffirms our commitment to ensuring Fife is the place to live, work, visit and invest."

NPF2 is currently being considered by Parliamentary committees. Once debated by Parliament, Scottish Ministers will take account of Parliament's views before approving the National Planning Framework.

Once it is approved, the national projects it identifies have to be taken into account in the new strategic development plans and local development plans. These will replace existing structure and local plans. NPF2 will also be a material consideration, where appropriate, in determining planning applications.
