Faber Maunsell | AECOM Appointed On Clyde Gateway Transport Study

Faber Maunsell | AECOM has been appointed by the Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company to develop a transport strategy for the East End of Glasgow and parts of South Lanarkshire.

Clyde Gateway is a partnership between Glasgow and South Lanarkshire Councils, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government. It is the largest regeneration initiative in Scotland, covering an area of more than 2,000 acres.

Over a 20-year period, the Urban Regeneration Company (URC) has been tasked with delivering £1.5bn of private sector investment to bring new offices and workspaces, new employment opportunities and new housing to the communities of Bridgeton, Dalmarnock, Parkhead, Rutherglen and Shawfield.

Neil Halket, Regional Director at Faber Maunsell's Glasgow office said: "Given the extent of redevelopment proposed within the Clyde Gateway and surrounding area, it is important that Transportation forms the forefront of the development proposals so that an integrated transport system is developed which supports the social and economic regeneration of the Clyde Gateway area.

"This system will require to maximise the proportion of trips by alternative modes in accordance with current sustainable planning guidance as well as facilitating 'active travel' (such as walking and cycling) to improve the population of the Clyde Gateway."

The area will directly benefit from Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games, thanks to the construction of new venues and the Athletes' Village, and the Clyde Gateway partners are already working to ensure that the communities enjoy a long-term legacy from the Games.

The study will start immediately and is expected to be complete by late August 2009.
