Proposals totalling nearly £20m for four new primaries to further improve the school estate in Dundee are to be considered by the city council's education committee on Monday.
The committee is being recommended to approve consultation on: a £9.42 million proposal to build two primary schools to replace Charleston Primary, Lochee Primary and St Clement's Primary on a shared site next to the current St Clement's Primary site, a £10.3 million proposal to build two primary schools to replace Park Place Primary, Park Place Nursery and St Joseph's Primary on a shared site at the location of the former Harris Academy Annexe on Blackness Road.
Two separate reports will be considered by the committee detailing how the council's commitment to improve educational facilities, combined with falling school rolls and the ongoing cost of building maintenance, has contributed to the new proposals.
The results of any consultation process would be brought back to the education committee before any final decision is made.
Dundee City Council administration leader Cllr Kevin Keenan said: "The city council is already successfully improving the quality of schools. This is being carried out through the £90m PPP programme, the £15m replacement for Kingspark, the £11.5m replacement for Whitfield and Newfields primaries and the near £17m improvements to Forthill Primary and St John's High.
"These plans would also represent a significant boost for the construction industry and I am keen that as many people as possible in Dundee can benefit from the creation of new schools. This forms part of the city council's efforts to assist the Dundee economy to help businesses by bringing forward large projects like this in these times."
Education convener Cllr Laurie Bidwell added: "The city council aims to provide each of these new schools with a high-quality teaching and learning environment with modern resources in innovative and inspirational buildings. We will also ensure that the new buildings are energy efficient and the number of places is matched with the projected rolls in each area."
