Glasgow's housing stock could be boosted with 2100 new homes if a bid for additional funding from the Scottish Government is accepted.
A list of potential land acquisitions and new housing projects was approved by the Council's Executive Committee today. It was drawn up after the Scottish Government announced it was to accelerate funding for its Affordable Housing Investment Programme.
Glasgow could be in line for a share of at least £16.8m from the £100m fund and must be ready to submit a bid for these resources.
If accepted, the money would be administered by the Council through the Housing Development Funding Programme for use by the Registered Social Landlords (RSLs), normally housing associations or housing co-operatives. It is likely some of the homes would be developed for people with a variety of special needs, including autism.
A number of the proposed land acquisitions, which cover the whole of the city, involve vacant and derelict sites including disused schools and nurseries which would mean bringing this land back into productive use and focusing resources on regenerating these parts of the city.
The new homes would be in addition to the 1340 houses that were approved for funding by the Council in August of this year.
Councillor George Ryan, Executive Member for Development and Regeneration, said: "Given that the Scottish Government has announced it is accelerating its investment programme for affordable housing, we look forward to being able to submit a bid for extra cash to fund more housing projects in the city.
"Now more than ever, given the global economic situation, we need to keep up the momentum of offering a substantial number of new affordable homes for rent and low-cost home ownership for the people of Glasgow."
