Fife Council this week became the first local authority in Scotland to be publicly recognised for tackling climate change and reducing carbon emissions.
The council is one of only seven organisations across the country to achieve 'Carbon Trust Standard' certification, the world's first carbon reduction award scheme.
All Scottish businesses and public sector organisations are being urged to take advantage of the new 'Carbon Trust Standard' certification to prove they are getting greener - a move that's especially important as Scotland takes the lead in action on climate change.
The seven Scottish public and private sector organisations to be certified with the Carbon Trust Standard have collectively made savings of over 20,000t CO2 per annum, equivalent to the emissions from heating 6,421 average households a year.
Fife Council's Executive Director, Environment and Development Stuart Nichol is delighted that Fife is leading the way in Scotland in carbon reduction. He commented: "Fife Council is serious about reducing its carbon footprint and we have set ourselves the target of becoming the leading green Council in Scotland. A key element of this work is managing climate change impacts and energy use. For Fife, the Carbon Trust Standard provides a valuable independent assessment and advice on our systems and procedures and confirmation we are achieving carbon emissions reductions.
"By signing Scotland's Climate Change Declaration, we are committed to reducing carbon emissions by 80% before 2050 we have also set targets of 3% reductions year on year."
