Construction work recently began on a £6m state-of-the-art community sport and leisure facility development at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld.
The multi-million pound development by North Lanarkshire Council will comprise a new two story leisure and sports facility at the north side of the stadium covering an area of 3,800 square metres. The new facility will include a gymnasium, dance and conditioning studios, beauty therapy services, two additional seven-a-side synthetic sports pitches and children's play areas which will be available for use by the local community.
Christine Pollock, North Lanarkshire Council's Executive Director of Learning and Leisure Services said: "I was very pleased to have the opportunity to see first hand the transformation taking place at Broadwood. The beginning of this construction programme represents once again North Lanarkshire Council's commitment to delivering top class sports and recreational facilities to the people of not only Cumbernauld but communities across North Lanarkshire."
Learning and Leisure Committee Convener Councillor Jim Logue added: "With the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and the upcoming International Children's Games being held in Lanarkshire in 2011 this superb sports development will further enhance the sporting opportunities for people across North Lanarkshire. And it will further help Sportscotland achieve its ambition of getting more people involved in physical activities on a more regular basis."
In addition to the sporting and leisure facilities the completed complex will include toilet and changing facilities, a medical room and office accommodation.
North Lanarkshire Council awarded a major part of the development contract to leading construction firm Mansell, part of the Balfour Beatty Group.
George Hood, managing director of Mansell Scotland said: "This is a fantastic project for Mansell to be involved in and further strengthens our portfolio in the central belt. On completion, the new sports and leisure facilities will be available for use by the whole community."
