The Crown Estate, which owns Midlothian's Whitehill estate, has unveiled proposals that could create a new village centre for Rosewell village.
The plans form part of a submission made to the Scottish Government as part of the Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative.
The proposals involve rejuvenating an old steading, which links the existing village to new housing being developed. Complementing this would be the development of housing and flats for rent on another site to the east of the road running through the village.
"We are keen to work with Midlothian Council and the local community to help develop Rosewell in a way which is sustainable and improves the quality of life for residents," explained Alan Laidlaw, Head of The Crown Estate's Edinburgh office.
The Crown Estate will involve the local community in shaping the plans, which will include consideration of how best to develop the steading in a way that creates a focal point for the village. Options could include commercial premises or a new community facility.
"We are at a very early stage in the process," added Alan Laidlaw. "We are keen to hear community views on how best to contribute to the development of the village."
Environmental sustainability will be central to the technologies and working practices involved in the development. This will include consideration of the best use of energy and renewables, water conservation, waste management and the use of building materials. Ways to encourage greater use of public transport will also be addressed.
However, The Crown Estate is also stressing the social role that the proposals could play by creating a new focal point that brings together residents of the older parts of Rosewell with residents of the new housing being built.
Through this project The Crown Estate aims work with the local community to develop a masterplan for Rosewell's future development.
