A survey of the condition of houses in the private sector in Dundee is on the cards.

A report to the city council's housing, Dundee Contract Services and environment services committee on Monday August 25 recommends that suitable consultants are engaged to take on the work.

Housing convener Councillor George Regan said: "We want to secure the best quality housing for all of Dundee's citizens. The council is doing its bit, along with its partners to provide improved social rented homes for people in the city. For example, we have a huge upgrading programme for council housing in Dundee, with more than £200m being invested.


"However, it is important that everyone in Dundee has a decent home to live in and it is planned that the council would use government grant to fund a survey of the private sector.

"Local authorities have a duty under legislation to show how they will address issues relating to private sector housing and the survey will be a major step towards us achieving this."

The survey will assess the need for improvement, repair and maintenance within the private sector and will gather information on a number of issues, including houses that are below tolerable standard and the levels and nature of disrepair.

The survey would be the first step towards determining the forms of assistance that could be provided to the private sector to help and encourage repair and maintenance of their property.
