Stirling's First Sustainable Supervillage Planned

Stirling Council's Executive has agreed that the Major Growth Area at Durieshill be put forward to the Scottish Government's Sustainable Communities Initiative (SSCI).

The Government's new initiative supports sustainable developments, which demonstrate innovation and quality of design, reduce carbon emissions, minimise pollution, and create opportunities to live healthier, environmentally responsible lives.

If successful the Council's proposals will obtain support and funding from the Government in developing Durieshill as a sustainable community.

Executive Chairman and Leader of Stirling Council Councillor Graham Houston said: "This is an important opportunity to deliver the sustainable growth of Stirling. The scope of developing the Durieshill site offers an opportunity for Stirling to be at the forefront in building a unique and sustainable community from scratch. The Council will work in partnership with partner agencies, the Walker Group who is the developer and local communities to achieve high standards of sustainability and of community facilities."

Last month the Court of Session declared that Stirling Council’s plans to develop a super-village in the area to the south east of Stirling known as Durieshill can go ahead.

This area has long been identified by Stirling Council as a major growth area to deal with the demand for new housing and to avoid urban sprawl in smaller towns and villages throughout the council area. The site is to the west of Plean and south of Pirnhall roundabout on land bounded by the M9 and the M80.

The new community is likely to have a population of up to 7000, 2,500 homes, two primary schools, a secondary school and nursery, library and sports and health facilities. A business park and shopping complex are also planned.

The next steps in getting the new super-village underway will be to complete a Masterplan, leading to the submission of a planning application, both of which will be subject to public consultation.
