Councillors on the Policy and Resources Executive Sub Committee unanimously agreed that the historic building should be kept open, given its prominent location, symbolism and significance.
HM Revenue and Customs has recently outlined proposals for a reorganisation of its office accommodation across the UK. Included in the proposals are plans to withdraw from Custom House, which sits on the banks of the River Clyde.

A consultation process is underway and Councillors agreed to submit detailed opinion calling for the building to be kept open.
Councillor Jim Clocherty, Convener of the Council's Regeneration Committee said: "There are around 80 people employed by Customs in Greenock, chiefly in gaming and licensing revenue. That makes it a significant local employer and the loss of these jobs would have a detrimental impact on the variety of quality employment opportunities available within Inverclyde.
"The building is also historically significant and is a symbol of our maritime heritage. It sits at the centre of Inverclyde's Waterfront regeneration and it hosts a small museum of customs and excise exhibits which are of interest to tourists, particularly given the historic location and spectacular setting.
"We will be writing to HMRC and urging them to retain Greenock’s Custom House."
