Janet Brougham House, a new residential home providing an enhanced service for vulnerable older people in Dundee, has been officially opened by city council social work and health convener Councillor Helen Wright.
The new home is designed to be dementia "friendly" and provides full en-suite facilities in three residential wings with eight bedrooms in each one. Each wing has its own lounge, dining and kitchen facilities and there is level access to a safe, sensory garden. The open plan "homely" lounges and personalised bedrooms help residents feel more at home. They can also enjoy various social events.
The Janet Brougham House replacement completes a series of refurbishments and new builds for older people's services in Dundee. The dementia friendly design has been informed by recommendations of the Dementia Services Development Centre at Stirling University and reflects the need to meet the ever-changing requirements of older people who live in residential homes.
Residents have settled into their new surroundings and have very positive comments about their new home.
Councillor Wright said: "This new building provides residents with comfortable surroundings and access to an impressive range of facilities which will encourage greater independence and enhance the residents' quality of life. At the same time, staff will be able to focus on looking after older people with greater needs such as dementia."
The new home replaces the original Janet Brougham House which was located in Robertson Street. It is the fourth residential home for older people in Dundee to incorporate dementia-friendly design principles.
