Antonine Wall Named As World Heritage Site

The Antonine Wall has been named as a World Heritage Site.

The stone and turf fortification, also known as the Clyde-Forth frontier line, was built by the Romans.

Glasgow City Council along with four other local authorities - East Dunbartonshire, Falkirk, North Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire - gave official backing to the bid to give the wall World Heritage status.

The Antonine Wall can be found in Glasgow at two locations - Drumchapel and Summerston.

Unesco's world heritage committee, meeting in the Canadian city of Quebec, ruled on July 7, that the site of the 2000-year-old landmark, which runs for 37 miles from Bo'ness in West Lothian to Old Kilpatrick in West Dunbartonshire, should be recognised.

Councillor George Ryan, Executive Member for Development and Regeneration at Glasgow City Council, said: "This is fantastic news for Glasgow and all the areas that the Antonine Wall passes through. The success of the bid is well-deserved and gives overdue recognition to this Wall, which is undoubtedly internationally significant in cultural and historical terms.

"This announcement can be the springboard to attracting visitors to the Wall from around the world and so bring benefit to our tourist industry and the wider economy. I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in the bid."
