Doors Open At Aberdeen Station Travel Centre

A new travel centre, built by Miller Construction and managed by First ScotRail, opened recently at Aberdeen Station as part of a major redevelopment in the city centre.

The leading construction firm is the main contractor for Hammerson's ambitious £250m Union Square project, which will see the creation of a major retail and leisure development on a nine hectare site adjacent to the railway station and harbour area.

Brian McQuade, Joint Managing Director, Miller Construction, said: "We are delighted to be working for Hammerson and with First ScotRail, on this prestigious project and we are content with the progress we are making in Aberdeen. The opening of the travel centre at the station marks a key milestone and is already delivering benefits for public transport users."

The new 163 sq m, purpose-built centre is bright and modern and boasts enhanced facilities to meet the growing needs of public transport users. These include eight ticket desks fitted with hearing loops, a lowered ticket counter for customers using wheelchairs, and new customer information screens. Under the contract Miller Construction has also built new public toilets and upgraded and reopened the previously used trackside car park as a drop-off and pick-up area, taxi rank and blue badge holder parking area.

The firm demolished the city's old bus station in February, allowing work on Aberdeen's new shopping centre to progress. With piles now in the ground and steelwork well underway, the work is on target for the scheduled autumn 2009 completion.

Peter Williams, First ScotRail's Commercial Director, said: "The new travel centre provides customers with a facility which far better meets their overall travel requirements. With a bright, modern feel and a host of improvements, customers are receiving a higher level of service quality."

Guy Wells, Development Manager for Hammerson said: "We are delighted to have handed over this state of the art travel centre to First ScotRail. This marks a further milestone in the progress being made on the Union Square development as we continue towards our retail centre opening of autumn 2009."
