First ScotRail Uses Station Solutions From SFX

Following successful trials, First ScotRail has made a substantial investment in the latest technology to improve the overall journey experience of blind and partially sighted customers.

In conjunction with the RNIB, SFX Technologies has developed the React wayfinding system, which utilises SFX patented loudspeaker technology.

The system was originally conceived by the RNIB to provide blind and partially sighted people with the solution to assist in their orientation and navigation around city centres and transport locations.

With customer service and safety information becoming increasingly important in the railway industry, this technology can be used to deliver a number of messages - in any required language - where and when it is needed.

The information within the RNIB React system is accessed via a specially developed RF (radio frequency) key fob carried by the visually impaired passenger. These key Fobs transmit the RNIB RF protocol, which allows them to communicate with any of the RNIB React units located throughout major cities and transport hubs in the UK.

In line with their drive to provide ongoing customer facility enhancements, First ScotRail has installed the RNIB React system at stations across Scotland including Lenzie, Camelon, Brunstane, Kirkcaldy and Larbert. The Company is now considering further plans to install the RNIB React system at larger stations, including Queen Street in Glasgow.

Peter Williams, Commercial Director at First ScotRail said:"One of our key priorities is to ensure that our services and stations are accessible to all our customers. We have received positive feedback from people using the systems already installed and we will continue to focus on delivering further customer enhancements over the course of the franchise."

Douglas Ellis, Assistant Project Manager, Transport Scotland said: "Transport Scotland is pleased to work with First ScotRail to fund and deliver station improvements, such as the React system which helps blind and partially sighted people, making it easier for them to access rail services."
