Mandatory Glove Policy Takes Safety To A New Level

Rok has put the wellbeing of its Scottish workforce in safer hands after implementing a new on-site safety policy.

Rok's new mandatory gloves policy takes personal protective equipment (PPE) to another level.

As well as PPE such as hi-visibility jackets, boots and hard hats, which are commonplace across the industry, Rok, which has offices across Scotland, has taken the innovative step of making it mandatory that everybody on site must wear safety gloves.

The gloves policy arose as a result of the fact that hand injuries accounted for 20% of injuries across Rok in one region. It has proved its worth having already prevented two serious accidents since it became mandatory last month.

This policy is just one of many implemented by Rok, which refuses to rest on its laurels having more than halved its accident frequency rate from 0.72 (June 2006) to 0.35 (December 2007).

Rok's band managing directors undertake a minimum of two inspections each per month and the business is committed to achieving British Safety Council Audit 5 Star status by December 2010.

George Fraser, Rok's Managing Director for Scotland, said: "Health and safety is of primary importance to Rok and always has been, so we are constantly looking for ways to improve our procedures. By making safety gloves mandatory on all of our sites, we can help to prevent a wide range of injuries which can range from minor cuts to septicaemia or even severed digits."
