A key phase of Scottish Water's £11.5 million project to upgrade a strategic rising sewer main connecting Renfrew and Glasgow is set to begin, resulting in a significant road closure.
From Monday, 28 April 2025, Ferry Road in Renfrew will be closed to all vehicular traffic for a period of four months. This closure is necessary to allow engineers to install a temporary overland pipeline. This temporary infrastructure will manage wastewater flows from the North Lodge pumping station while the existing underground pipe undergoes essential relining work.
Robert Archer, Scottish Water Alliance Manager, acknowledged the disruption the closure will cause. "We appreciate the closure is going to cause some inconvenience for a few months, but it is absolutely vital for us to deliver this much needed project," he stated. "We are working as quickly as we can to deliver millions of pounds worth of investment at an unprecedented pace to protect the environment and provide peace of mind to the local community."
Mr Archer also highlighted the progress made so far. "Nearly a kilometre of pipe has already been successfully relined and upgraded, and this second phase will see the section running from North Lodge pumping station protected as well."
The closure of Ferry Road, between King's Inch Road and Campbell Street, will enable the temporary pipeline to be connected to the existing underground rising main. Wastewater flows from the North Lodge pumping station will then be diverted through this temporary pipe, allowing the new lining to be drawn through the original pipe via access pits dug at strategic points along its route.
Once the relining is complete, the wastewater flows will be returned to the newly upgraded rising main. Subsequently, the temporary overland pipeline will be removed, the access pits will be backfilled, and the affected area will be reinstated.
Mr Archer praised the local community for their understanding. "We have been working closely with customers and local businesses to ensure the work has as little impact as possible and we will continue to keep them informed at every stage," he said. "They have shown great patience and understanding so far and we are extremely grateful for their continued cooperation."
The significant infrastructure project is being managed and delivered by Scottish Water's alliance partner, Caledonia Water Alliance, and their specialist contractor, Environmental Techniques.
