Balfour Beatty Reappointed To Network Rail Framework

Construction News Image
Balfour Beatty has announced its reappointment as a key delivery partner on Network Rail's eight-year Supply Chain Services' framework, continuing its role from its initial appointment in 2018. The framework also includes an option for a further two-year extension.

Valued at approximately £23 million per year, the framework will see Balfour Beatty supply, operate, and maintain a fleet of high-performance tamping machines to support essential track renewal and maintenance projects across Scotland, England, and Wales.

These tamping machines are crucial for maintaining the railway network. They function by hydraulically lifting the track and packing ballast underneath the sleepers, effectively filling voids and realigning the tracks. This process ensures a smoother and more stable railway for both freight and passenger trains, ultimately contributing to a reduction in speed restrictions and line closures caused by track defects.

Balfour Beatty's successful reappointment to this framework builds upon the company's established 25-year track record of providing safe and efficient rail plant services. It also reflects its ongoing commitment to investing in the latest rail plant technology and its proven ability to deliver cost-effective and reliable solutions for Network Rail.

The company operates one of the most modern tamping machine fleets in the UK and has a significant investment pipeline that includes the introduction of four new state-of-the-art electric machines. These are scheduled to enter service between 2025 and 2026, representing a pioneering move that aligns with Balfour Beatty's sustainability strategy, "Building New Futures," as well as Network Rail's own sustainability and decarbonisation commitments.

Mick Rayner, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty's Rail business, said: "We are proud to continue our longstanding relationship with Network Rail, having first been appointed to the Supply Chain Services' framework in 2018. By leveraging our extensive expertise and our unique, modern and sustainable fleet, we will ensure the railway network remains resilient and efficient. Our commitment to innovation and sustainability will help drive improvements, delivering value for both passengers and freight operators across Scotland and the wider UK."

Works under the reappointed framework are scheduled to commence in Spring 2025. At its peak, Balfour Beatty will employ approximately 110 people across the regions covered by the contract.
