Prestwick Leisure Club Refurbishment Extended

Construction News Image
South Ayrshire Council has announced an extension to the ongoing refurbishment project at Prestwick Leisure Club.

Originally commenced in August of last year, the extensive works are now expected to continue until August this year to accommodate a complete overhaul of the changing facilities.

The project has already seen significant progress, with the installation of a new roof equipped with solar panels and the external blockwork reaching roof height. Current works are focused on replacing additional steelwork, repairing internal walls, and installing a new Air Handling Ventilation System. The upgrades also include increasing the water supply and improving water storage capacity within the building.

A recent decision to enhance the facilities further involves a complete refurbishment of the existing changing rooms, transforming them into a modern 'changing village'. This additional work has necessitated an extension to the original timeline.

During the ongoing improvements, members of Club Fitness at Prestwick Leisure Centre are being offered access to the gym and pool facilities at the Citadel Leisure Centre in Ayr, Troon Leisure Club, and Maybole Leisure Club as part of their standard membership. Furthermore, all fitness equipment from Prestwick has been temporarily relocated to Whitletts Activity Centre, where it is available for use by all current Council Sport and Leisure members. Further details regarding the temporary gym at Whitletts can be found on the council's website.

Councillor Brian Connolly, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Sport and Leisure, commented on the development: "I'm delighted with the progress so far at Prestwick Leisure Club. We're committed to providing our customers with first class sport and leisure facilities, and the decision to expand the changing rooms into a changing village will make a huge difference to members. We really appreciate customers patience while works are ongoing, and I'm looking forward to the facility reopening later this summer."

Councillor Martin Kilbride, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Buildings, Housing and Environment, highlighted the sustainability aspects of the project: "The installation of a new roof with solar panels and the Air Handling Ventilation System is a key step in enhancing the sustainability of Prestwick Leisure Club. This project not only modernises the facility, but also reduces its environmental impact, aligning with our commitment to energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions."

Councillor Alec Clark, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Culture and Rural Affairs, emphasised the broader benefits of the refurbishment: "The ongoing improvements at Prestwick Leisure Club will not only benefit local residents but will also enhance the overall appeal of the area for visitors. I'm pleased that we're able to offer a top-tier leisure experience that further elevates South Ayrshire as a great place to visit and stay."
