SSEN Transmission Launches £1.4bn Procurement Drive

Construction News Image
SSEN Transmission has launched a significant procurement process, seeking applications from both new and existing contractors to deliver key elements of substation development as part of its RIIO-T3 and networks renewals investment programme, and beyond.

The framework agreement, now open for pre-qualification, reflects SSEN Transmission’s increased maximum value for moderate substation works, raising the threshold from £20m to £40m. This adjustment allows previously secured contractors and new potential partners to bid for crucial substation development elements, including associated overhead line and underground cable work.

Agreements worth up to an estimated £1.4bn are available, covering projects across the north of Scotland. Interested contractors are invited to complete the company’s Pre-Qualification Questionnaire via the Achilles UVDB platform.

Kevin Smith, Head of Supply Chain at SSEN Transmission, commented on the launch: “As we prepare to deliver the critical national infrastructure across the north of Scotland that is required for the delivery of energy security and clean power targets, it is crucial that we secure the supply chain that is needed – and the launch of our latest procurement process today marks a significant step forward in doing that. We’ve already secured the services of several key supply chain partners, including local companies – and now we’re ready to identify additional delivery partners who will help us with elements of substation work, with contracts of a value up to £40m."

SSEN Transmission plans to invest at least £22bn between 2026 and 2031 in infrastructure to support Scotland and the UK's energy security and net-zero targets. This includes the development of new substations and upgrades to existing ones, potentially supporting up to 8,400 jobs in the north of Scotland.

The application window is open for five weeks, closing at 12 noon on Friday 2 May. SSEN Transmission is also hosting a webinar on Friday 4 April at 10:00 am to provide further details about the new framework agreement and upcoming work.
