Robertson Group and Edinburgh College have formalised their collaborative efforts to provide students with practical experience and career development opportunities through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The partnership, involving Urban Union and Robertson Construction Central East, both part of Robertson Group, aims to bridge the gap between education and the construction industry.
The MOU focuses on widening access to construction careers, providing valuable work experience, and ensuring that training and education align with industry needs. While primarily benefiting built environment students, the agreement will also create opportunities across other college faculties, including business, IT, design, and sustainability, to explore diverse career paths within the built environment.
Students will have the opportunity to visit and gain practical experience at Urban Union’s large-scale housing developments and Robertson Construction Central East’s projects across Edinburgh, potentially leading to employment opportunities. The partnership will facilitate various activities, including career talks, employability programmes, guest presentations, and tailored support for students facing employment challenges. Leadership development programmes targeting females and other under-represented groups in the construction industry will also be explored.
This MOU builds on the success of a similar partnership between Urban Union and City of Glasgow College, which resulted in 19 students completing work placements and three securing full-time employment.
Neil McKay, Managing Director of Urban Union, said: "Building on the success of our partnership in Glasgow, it’s fantastic to now deliver these opportunities to Edinburgh College students. Together with the college, a diverse range of initiatives will be undertaken to benefit students beyond their studies and help them to kickstart a rewarding career."
David Cairns, Regional Managing Director of Robertson Construction Central East, added: "With many live projects across Edinburgh, we hope to provide as many meaningful opportunities as possible to help bridge the gap between education and the live working environment. This partnership with Edinburgh College further highlights our commitment to delivering social and economic benefits locally, and we look forward to seeing students gain valuable experience and thrive as a result."
Michael Jeffrey, Vice Principal: Corporate Development at Edinburgh College, said: "We are delighted to have signed this MOU with Urban Union and Robertson Construction Central East to provide our students with tailored support as they build their career in this vital industry. As one of Scotland’s largest colleges, it is incumbent on us to continue our strong record of providing the construction sector with the skilled workforce it requires, as well as ensuring it is accessible to all – and this new partnership aligns with that goal."
