£14m Rail Upgrade To Disrupt Inverclyde Lines

Construction News Image
Network Rail is set to invest over £14 million in vital infrastructure renewals on the Inverclyde lines, resulting in significant service disruptions from Saturday, March 15, to Tuesday, March 18. Engineers will work continuously across multiple locations between Port Glasgow, Gourock, and Wemyss Bay to upgrade track, refurbish structures, and repair a tunnel.

The planned works include the renewal of points at Wemyss Bay Junction near Port Glasgow, the replacement of lineside walls between Cartsdyke and Greenock Central stations, and the replacement of the timber deck on a railway bridge over Sinclair Street in Greenock. Additionally, extensive stonework repairs and waterproofing will be carried out within the mile-long Newton Street tunnel between Greenock West and Fort Matilda stations.

Due to the complexity of these projects, further works are scheduled for the following weekend, March 22 and 23. To maintain passenger transport during these periods, replacement bus services will operate between Paisley Gilmour Street and Wemyss Bay/Gourock on both weekends. Passengers are advised to check their journey details on ScotRail.co.uk or nationalrail.co.uk.

Ross Moran, Network Rail Scotland route director, said: “This vital work will help improve performance and reliability for our customers. Our engineers will work around-the-clock to complete these projects as quickly as possible and we thank passengers for their understanding while this crucial investment takes place."

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, said: “These improvements will bring long-term benefits for ScotRail customers, ensuring a more reliable and resilient railway for years to come. We are fully committed to keeping customers moving and getting them where they need to be while this work takes place, with rail replacement bus services operating to minimise disruption. We appreciate our customers’ patience and encourage anyone planning to travel to check their journey in advance.”
