Inverness is set to become a hub for innovative green heating technology through a new partnership between SSE Energy Solutions and Scottish Water Horizons. The collaboration will establish a low-carbon heat network in the Longman Drive area, utilising wastewater as a sustainable heat source.
The project, the first of its kind under the partnership, will harness thermal energy from a Scottish Water pumping station, which would otherwise be wasted. This energy will then be used to heat several key buildings, including local SSE and Scottish Water offices and facilities, as well as other public and private sector buildings in the vicinity.
The initiative builds on the Highlands' history of renewable energy innovation, extending the legacy of hydroelectric power into modern heating technology. It is anticipated that the project will create local opportunities for supply chain development and skills growth within the heat networks sector, contributing to the green economy.
Construction timelines will be announced following detailed design work, with operations expected to commence by 2028.
This project is part of a broader strategic partnership between SSE Energy Solutions and Scottish Water Horizons, aimed at developing low-carbon district heat networks across Scotland. Decarbonising heat, which accounts for 37% of the UK's CO2 emissions, is crucial to achieving national net-zero targets.
