Construction News Image
Construction has officially commenced on the new Gartcosh Community Hub, a significant project aimed at providing modern education and community facilities for the area.

At a groundbreaking ceremony, Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families, marked the start of construction.

"This new community hub represents a significant investment in the future of Gartcosh," said Councillor McBride. "It will provide a modern, inclusive learning environment for local children while offering fantastic facilities for the wider community. We are committed to delivering high-quality community and learning spaces to serve future generations."

The hub will feature a new Gartcosh Primary School, a nursery class, a specialist language and communication support center, flexible community spaces, modern indoor and outdoor sports facilities, and landscaped playgrounds.

The Gartcosh project is part of a £160 million investment in North Lanarkshire, with five similar projects underway or nearing construction.

Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, highlighted the scale of the developments, stating, "This multi-million-pound construction development is one of several exciting projects currently underway. They represent the biggest investment in infrastructure across North Lanarkshire. They are also at the heart of our towns and communities. And these projects reflect our ambition and aspiration to develop a modern education provision for all our young people."

Additionally, the council has approved the construction of three new community hubs in Glenboig, Ravenscraig, and Cumbernauld’s Abronhill.

Planning permission for the Gartcosh Community Hub was granted in April 2024, and Hub South West appointed BAM Construction as the main contractor.

"Breaking ground on the new hub marks an exciting milestone in our partnership with North Lanarkshire Council, BAM Construction, and our local supply chain," said Michael Ross, CEO of Hub South West. "Gartcosh Community Hub will not only provide an inspiring space for young people to learn and thrive but will also act as a cornerstone for community cohesion and economic growth in the region."

Jim Ward, Regional Director of BAM Construction Ltd, added: "We are delighted to continue our valued relationship with NLC and Hub SW to construct the new Gartcosh Community Hub. We look forward to delivering a first-class facility for the local community, and during the construction phase, we will continue to support the local community through our Social Value activities and leave a positive, lasting legacy for the community."

The project's design team includes architects BDP, civil and structural engineers Blyth & Blyth, and mechanical and electrical engineers Hulley & Kirkwood. Construction updates will be made available to the public.
