The 135th anniversary of the Forth Bridge, a world-renowned cantilever rail crossing, will be celebrated with a series of community events.
Opened on March 4th, 1890, by the then Prince of Wales, the bridge spans 2467 meters and carries the Edinburgh–Aberdeen rail line over the Firth of Forth.
Events planned for March 4th and 8th, 2025, include:
• An educational morning for local schoolchildren focused on the bridge's design and construction (March 4th).
• A public exhibition of historical archive materials (March 4th).
• Presentations from industry professionals on the bridge's history and maintenance (March 4th).
• An all-day public event with experts, archive materials, activities, and displays (March 8th).
"The Forth Bridge is an iconic structure, known around the world, and it is very fitting that we mark the 135 years of service it has provided for Scotland’s rail network," said Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop. "This series of events will celebrate the crossing’s links with the local community and give people an insight into the history of the bridge, as well as the year-round efforts that go into its maintenance today. Around three million passengers cross the Forth Bridge every year, and I look forward to it continuing to play this vital role for our transport network for years to come.”
