Apatura Secures 400MW Battery Storage Site Near Stirling

Construction News Image
Apatura, a renewable energy storage specialist, has secured planning permission for a new 400 megawatt (MW) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Stirling, Scotland.

The project, located at Denny near Plean, will cover 11.2 hectares and is a significant step in Apatura's mission to support the UK's net-zero transition.

This is Apatura's seventh battery storage project to receive planning consent in the past 12 months, bringing their total consented pipeline to 1.4GW.

"We are delighted that Ministers have supported this critically important scheme and the local council – Stirling – lodged no objections," said Andrew Philpott, Chief Development Officer at Apatura. "Our focus on Scotland is central to our vision to harness its renewable energy potential. These latest approvals reinforce Scotland's strategic advantage in delivering resilient energy infrastructure."

The Denny BESS site will include a battery electricity storage facility, associated infrastructure, and new native species tree planting to enhance biodiversity. It was approved by the Scottish Government's Energy Consents Unit on February 25th, 2025.

The project will contribute to Scotland's renewable energy targets and the UK's net-zero commitment. It will also create local job opportunities and a Community Benefit Fund.

"Battery energy storage systems play a crucial role in modern energy management, especially in the context of renewable energy integration and grid stability," Philpott said. "This scheme will help deliver stable energy prices, leading to reduced bills, taking the pressure off households while at the same time increasing energy security."
