Govt Explores Purchase Of Ardrossan Harbour

The Scottish Government has confirmed it is considering the potential purchase of Ardrossan Harbour. Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop announced the move in response to a Parliamentary Question.

"Today I have updated Parliament that I have instructed Transport Scotland and CMAL to explore a potential purchase of Ardrossan Harbour," said Ms. Hyslop. "I have taken this step to ensure we make progress on finding a solution at Ardrossan that can be delivered in a cost-effective way."

Ms. Hyslop explained that despite ongoing discussions and negotiations with the current owners, Peel Ports Group, a suitable commercial agreement has not been reached. She stated that this uncertainty was unacceptable for the communities of Arran and Ardrossan.

"Despite our best efforts we have been unable to reach an agreeable decision on the commercial approach," she said. "In my view, this was leading to uncertainty that the communities of Arran and Ardrossan cannot afford."

Ms. Hyslop acknowledged Peel Ports Group's continued investment in the harbour to maintain its operational status and emphasised the government's commitment to ensuring a reliable and modern Arran ferry service.

"The Scottish Government will ensure a reliable and modern service which we know is vital for local communities – and we intend to invest over £530 million in the coming year to support and enhance ferry services, including for Arran," she concluded. Discussions regarding the potential change of ownership are ongoing.
