Network Rail has completed a £3.5 million refurbishment of the Awe Viaduct, located near Taynuilt on the Oban branch of the West Highland Line.
The project, which began in Summer 2024, saw engineers replace the viaduct's timber deck, remove old paint, repair the wrought iron structure, and apply new paint. The work is expected to extend the viaduct's lifespan by at least 25 years.
"We’re delighted to have completed this £3.5m project on Awe viaduct on time and on budget while causing as little disruption as possible," said Owen Ferry, project manager, Network Rail. "This significant investment not only improves the structure's look but will help extend its life."
The Awe Viaduct, a three-span wrought iron structure, was originally completed in 1879 and carries the railway over the River Awe.
"We know the viaduct sits in a much-loved part of the world and we thank our neighbours and visitors for their understanding while we completed this crucial project," added Mr. Ferry.
