Clark Contracts has begun construction of a £6.7 million Water Sports Hub in Stranraer for the Stranraer Water Sports Association (SWSA).
Young people from Stranraer marked the start of the project with a groundbreaking ceremony. The hub, located adjacent to the current Harbour Office in Agnew Park, will include changing facilities, class and meeting rooms, a café, kitchen, offices, and public spaces.
"After years of planning and hard work, and generous support from our funders, it's wonderful to see construction finally beginning on our new Water Sports Hub," said John Fenwick, Chairman of Stranraer Water Sports Association. "I'm especially pleased that young people from our community have helped mark the occasion."
The facility, designed by architect John Renshaw to Passivhaus standards, is expected to open in Summer 2026.
"This facility will transform what we can offer as an association, creating opportunities for skills development, employment and establishing Stranraer as a premier destination for water sports events and training," added Mr. Fenwick. "It's a major step forward in the regeneration of our town."
The project is funded by £4.6 million from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund and £2.1 million from various sources, including Dumfries and Galloway Council development funds, South of Scotland Enterprise, Sport Scotland, the Holywood Trust, and the RYA.
"We are delighted to be working with Stranraer Water Sports Association on this exciting project," said Michael Scanlan, Director at Clark Contracts. "It is great to see continued development in Stranraer and we are looking forward to continuing to work in the area and providing these high-quality facilities for the local community."
