Clarkston Station Electrification Works Begin

Construction News Image
Network Rail has commenced work on the installation of a new footbridge at Clarkston station as part of a major electrification project on the line between East Kilbride and Glasgow.

The £140 million project, which is central to the Scottish Government's strategy to decarbonise passenger services, will see the electrification of the line between East Kilbride and Glasgow.

The new footbridge at Clarkston station will replace the existing structure and will be installed in mid-March. This will involve a temporary road closure to facilitate the crane operation.

"The footbridge and parapet works in and around Clarkston station allow the installation of the new overhead electrification equipment on this section of the route which will power cleaner and greener trains," said Karen Connor, Network Rail scheme project manager. "We appreciate that over the next four-months, we're delivering a significant phase engineering across the entire route. Once this completes in May, we'll then be in a position to ready the overhead lines for electrification."

The project also includes the creation of a new footpath to improve access to Platform 2 from the main public car park.

Network Rail is hosting a community drop-in event on Tuesday, 11th February 2025, at Clarkston Bowling and Tennis Club from 2pm to 5pm, to provide residents with an opportunity to meet the project team and ask questions.

The East Kilbride Enhancement project is expected to be completed in December 2025.
