Ayrshire College and South Ayrshire Council's Property Maintenance department have launched a new work experience programme designed to foster a sustainable talent pipeline within the local joinery sector.
The initiative provides Ayrshire College Carpentry and Joinery students with the opportunity to gain practical experience by working alongside experienced joiners at South Ayrshire Council.
"This work experience programme is an amazing opportunity to put what I’ve learned at the college into practice," said Mhia Doolan, a Joinery student at Ayrshire College. "Working alongside experienced joiners has taught me so much about the trade and the importance of being adaptable from problem-solving on-site to the importance of teamwork."
Each student is paired with a workplace mentor to guide them throughout their placement, bridging the gap between college learning and real-world industry practices.
"This new work experience programme is a fantastic example of how collaboration between education and industry can unlock real opportunities for our young people," said Councillor Martin Kilbride, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Buildings and Environment. "By connecting students with hands-on experience in a professional setting, we are helping to equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the joinery sector."
A total of 16 Ayrshire College students will participate in the programme, each benefiting from four weeks of hands-on industry experience.
"This collaboration reflects Ayrshire College and South Ayrshire Council's shared commitment to fostering the growth of skilled trades within the community," said Cameron Bell, Head of Learning & Skills - Construction Technology, Trades and Renewables. "By providing real-world learning experiences, the programme equips students with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the construction industry."
Through this joint initiative, Ayrshire College and South Ayrshire Council aim to empower the next generation of skilled professionals and drive economic resilience within the region.
