Shetland Islands Council Issues Biodiversity Guidance for Developers

Construction News Image
Shetland Islands Council has published an advice note to assist developers in enhancing biodiversity on their projects, aligning with current national planning policy.

The guidance, which is primarily intended for smaller-scale developments such as local housing projects, will also be valuable for larger developments and individuals seeking to enhance biodiversity on their own land or in community spaces.

The advice note emphasises the need to "protect biodiversity, reverse biodiversity loss, deliver positive effects from development and strengthen nature networks", as outlined in Scottish planning policy. It encourages developers to assess existing biodiversity, minimise the impact of their projects, and incorporate measures to enhance biodiversity within Shetland's unique environment. This may include planting native species suitable for the Shetland climate, creating wildflower meadows, and establishing tree, scrub, and woodland areas.

"Staff in the Council's Planning Service encourage any developers to discuss any potential projects before submitting any planning applications, to increase the chances of a successful planning application," the council stated.

The guidance provides valuable information for developers looking to integrate biodiversity considerations into their projects and ensure compliance with current planning regulations.
