Construction is underway on the transformation of Dundee's Bell Street multi-storey car park into a £25.4 million green transport hub.
The project, funded by £14.4 million from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund and an £11 million tender recently approved by the city council, follows £4.5 million of enabling works.
Alex Norris MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recently visited the site to learn more about the project.
"It was a pleasure to be here in Dundee and to find out more about this ambitious project to create a green transport hub," said Norris. "Accelerating the journey to net zero is a key part of this government’s Plan for Change, and projects such as this are vital in helping us achieve this."
The main works, being carried out by McLaughlin & Harvey Construction through the SCAPE Framework, will include:
• Installation of electric vehicle chargers powered by a rooftop solar panel array and battery storage system.
• A full mechanical and electrical upgrade, along with new feature cladding and a ground floor cycle storage and bike reuse centre.
• Enhanced landscaping and active travel routes designed to connect with future active travel developments.
"This project represents an ambitious redevelopment of the car park into a pioneering green transport hub which will make a significant contribution towards our goal of creating a greener city and cut down on carbon emissions," said Cllr Mark Flynn, City Council leader.
Cllr Steven Rome, Council convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure, added: "The hub will accommodate infrastructure to provide people with access to sustainable transport options that improve connectivity and make the city centre greener, safer, and a more attractive place to live, work and visit. I am very excited to see when this is completed."
