A new programme designed to encourage young women to consider careers in construction has been hailed as a success.

The 'Girls into Construction' project, a collaboration between Kier, Coatbridge High and St Ambrose High Schools, North Lanarkshire Council, and hub South West, introduced secondary school pupils to the diverse range of opportunities within the construction sector.

Over eight sessions, the programme provided participants with valuable insights into the industry, including practical activities, site visits, and interactive workshops delivered by female role models from Kier Scotland.

"The Girls into Construction Programme provides the next generation of construction professionals with a fantastic opportunity to gain a real insight into the industry," said Sean O’Callaghan, framework director for Kier Construction North & Scotland.

Councillor Louise Roarty, Depute Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, emphasised the importance of encouraging female participation in the construction sector: "Encouraging young women to see construction as a viable career option is crucial for addressing the gender imbalance in the industry."

Rebecca Beveridge, Marketing and Partnerships Lead at Hub South West, added: "Creating a diverse and inclusive pathway for girls to enter the construction sector is essential for driving innovation and addressing skills shortages."

The programme, which targeted girls in their second year of secondary school, aimed to challenge gender stereotypes and inspire the next generation of female construction professionals.
