£1.25m Garry Viaduct Repairs Works Continue

Construction News Image
A £1.25 million programme of repair works is set to resume at Garry Viaduct, a 161-year-old structure on Network Rail's Highland Main Line.

A number of overnight road closures on the B847 near Blair Atholl have been announced to allow for essential repairs.

The four-month programme, which began in early December, involves crucial masonry repairs to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the structure spanning the River Garry.

To facilitate the construction work, the B847 will be closed overnight from 11 January to 28 February between 22:00 and 06:00, Saturday to Thursday. A diversion route via Tummel Bridge will be in place during these closures.

These repairs are part of Network Rail's ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and reliable railway network for passengers and freight customers.

Andy McManus, scheme project manager, Network Rail, said “The work at Garry Viaduct is essential so we can maintain the structure and keep services on the Highland Main Line safe and reliable.

“We’re investing millions in the Highland Main Line this year, including a £3 million bridge replacement project at Killiecrankie. The 140-year-old bridge over the railway was recently demolished, with a new bridge now in position. Work will be completed there in March 2025.

“We understand the impact this work is having on those living near Garry Viaduct and we thank the community for their patience whilst we carry out this vital project.”

Work at Garry Viaduct is due to be completed on 25 April 2025 and is part of a wide-ranging bridge modernisation programme aimed at increasing reliability and improving performance on Scotland’s Railway.
