Port Of Aberdeen To Lead In North Sea Decommissioning

Construction News Image
The Port of Aberdeen is solidifying its position as a leading hub for North Sea decommissioning activities, with significant infrastructure upgrades and a growing portfolio of successful projects.

With the North Sea Transition Authority forecasting £24 billion in decommissioning expenditure between 2023 and 2032, the port is well-positioned to capitalize on this growing market.

The port boasts extensive facilities, including over 7,600 metres of quayside capable of accommodating vessels up to 300 metres in length and possessing ultra-heavy-lift capabilities. It also holds a Waste Management Licence from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, ensuring safe and responsible handling of materials, including Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM).

Recent projects have showcased the port's capabilities. In July 2024, the port supported the offloading of the North Sea's largest Subsea Isolation Valve (SSIV) from DeepOcean's Edda Freya vessel. Additionally, Phoenix Decom successfully utilized the port's laydown space for the onshore processing of 10km of flexible flowlines and umbilicals for DOF Subsea, demonstrating the port's efficiency and commitment to safety.

By combining world-class infrastructure with a strong local supply chain and a commitment to environmental stewardship, the Port of Aberdeen is setting the standard for safe, cost-effective, and sustainable decommissioning operations in the North Sea.
