Scottish Water has launched an online map that provides real-time data on waste water overflows across Scotland.
The interactive map allows users to search for specific locations and view information on when and where overflows have occurred. This increased transparency aims to improve public understanding and empower communities.
The launch of the map follows the installation of over 1,000 new sewer monitors as part of a £500 million investment to upgrade Scotland's waste water network. These monitors provide valuable data on network performance and help identify potential issues.
Scottish Water has also established a dedicated team to proactively address flooding and pollution incidents caused by sewer blockages.
The new map aligns with recommendations from Environmental Standards Scotland, which called for greater transparency on overflow information. By providing real-time data, Scottish Water aims to improve its understanding of overflow activity and prioritize investment in areas where it is most needed.
The map will show:
• The location of Scottish Water monitored overflows;
• The status and recent overflow event activity;
• How overflows are ranked in order of investment priority and whether investment is planned
Professor Simon Parsons, Scottish Water's Director of Environment, Planning and Assurance, who has led the delivery of the Improving Urban Waters routemap, said: "The new online service will allow people in Scotland to be better informed with an easy-to-use map to fully understand where and when sewer system overflows are occurring.
"It's been important to Scottish Water to ensure that the development of this service has taken our customers' view into account. We've worked with several external groups on the design and the supporting information, so I'm pleased this has been a really collaborative process."
The new interactive map can be easily accessed via the Scottish Water website: www.scottishwater.co.uk/overflows
