Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has become the first UK local authority to turn non-recyclable waste into an alternative fuel.
The council has partnered with Advetec to process 10 tonnes of domestic and commercial black bag waste daily at a waste transfer site in Benbecula. This innovative approach will divert 100% of non-recyclable waste from landfill, reducing the need for long-distance transportation and significantly cutting carbon emissions.
The waste is processed using a cutting-edge mechanical biological treatment plant, which breaks down organic matter and produces Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF). This low-carbon fuel can be used in various industrial processes, reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.
By implementing this new waste management solution, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable future and setting an example for other local authorities across the UK.
