Plans To Overhaul of Dumbarton's Artizan Centre Take Major Step Forward

Construction News Image
Plans to revitalise Dumbarton's Artizan Centre have taken a significant step forward as planning permission has been granted for the next phase of the project.

The approval was given at a recent West Dunbartonshire Council planning committee meeting for shopfront improvements, landscaping, and associated infrastructure at the town centre location. The planning permission was granted with certain conditions attached.

The Artizan Centre redevelopment is part of a wider investment package supported by the UK Government, which also includes the redevelopment of Glencairn House and the Connecting Dumbarton project.

As part of a public consultation last year, residents expressed a strong desire for more open space in the town centre. In response, the new plans include public realm improvements, property upgrades, and the preparation of future development plots.

A key feature of the redevelopment will be the creation of a new public square. The square will offer outdoor seating, a small play park with a mix of natural, sensory, and accessible play features, as well as soft landscaping. A new structure inspired by historic shipbuilding elements will serve as the centrepiece of the development.

The square will also be designed to host a variety of events, with integrated lighting and services, and will be able to accommodate outdoor market stalls, food vans, and community events.

The aim of the new public realm is to breathe life into the town centre, drawing more people to spend time in the area. It is hoped that the development will increase footfall, encourage leisure activities, and improve the overall experience for residents and visitors alike.

The works, which are due to start in early 2025, mark the first phase of the Artizan Masterplan—a long-term vision for the site's redevelopment. The masterplan includes residential spaces, retail units, restaurants and cafes, leisure facilities, as well as extensive landscaping and public realm areas.

The overall project will be delivered in phases to minimise disruption to existing businesses and local residents. During recent demolition works, pedestrian access paths were diverted, but the council has taken steps to ensure any disruption remains minimal and that local traders and residents are kept informed of progress.
