Glasgow Secures £6.8m For Energy Efficiency Upgrades

Construction News Image
Glasgow City Council has been awarded £6.845 million from the Scottish Government to enhance energy efficiency in homes across the city. This funding, allocated for the 2024/25 financial year, will primarily benefit residents in Kempsthorn, Craigend, and Barmulloch through the Area Based Schemes (ABS) program.

The ABS program focuses on addressing fuel poverty and improving energy efficiency in specific areas. By prioritising external wall insulation, the program aims to reduce energy consumption and lower costs for eligible households. The goal is to help homes achieve an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C or better by 2030.

To qualify, households must reside in areas within the lowest 25% of the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (2020), be in Council Tax bands A-C (or D under certain conditions), and not be part of a Registered Social Landlord (RSL) housing scheme. Additionally, the program targets households with individuals who are particularly vulnerable to the cold.

Participants in the program will have access to support services from the Wise Group, Home Energy Scotland, and HEAT, which offer energy advice and assistance throughout the process.

The ABS programme helps deliver the aims of city and national initiatives such as Glasgow City Council's Affordable Warmth Strategy, Sustainable Glasgow, and the Climate Change Strategy, as well as the Scottish Government's Housing to 2040 Vision.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Housing at Glasgow City Council, said: "The measures delivered through this programme are making homes in Glasgow more energy efficient, helping people and families with their energy bills, and reducing emissions. The continued funding of the programme will spread these benefits to even more households in the city."

The council is working with the Scottish Government to explore ways to address the challenges that Glasgow is experiencing in relation to accelerating delivery, maximising the drawdown of funding from the ABS programme and increasing the number of homes that receive energy efficiency measures. The council will continue to engage with RSLs in Glasgow to explore delivering these measures in mixed-tenure blocks across the city.
