Network Rail is investing £500,000 to renew over five kilometres of lineside fencing near the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct. The work, which is set to begin later this month, aims to replace life-expired boundary fencing to enhance public safety and protect the railway infrastructure.

The Glenfinnan Viaduct, a popular tourist attraction on the West Highland Line, has seen increased instances of trespass as visitors seek to capture photographs of the stunning scenery and passing trains. The new fencing will not only improve safety but will also be designed to complement the natural beauty of the area.


Prior to the fencing renewal, necessary tree and vegetation management work will be undertaken to enhance public views of the viaduct.

To ensure minimal disruption to train services, the fencing project will be carried out without affecting regular operations.

In addition to the fencing renewal, Network Rail is currently investing £3.5 million in a separate project to refurbish the viaduct itself. This work involves repairing the concrete structure, improving the track bed, and enhancing drainage systems.

Hayley Simpson, Network Rail scheme project manager, said: "The investment we are making in renewing the fencing in Glenfinnan will help secure the railway and keep the public safe as they enjoy the world-famous views of the viaduct and surrounding scenery.

"The work will be delivered without disrupting tarin services and the fencing we will install will be sympathetic to the natural landscape through which the line runs and not affect people's enjoyment of the many walking trails and the spectacular views."
