Midlothian Council has been awarded £753,062 from the Scottish Government’s Active Travel Infrastructure Fund to deliver a range of projects aimed at improving active travel options in Easthouses, Penicuik, and Bonnyrigg.
Easthouses Primary School A significant portion of the funding, £485,138, will be used to enhance safety for pupils walking and cycling to Easthouses Primary School. The project involves widening the footway along Morris Road and Easthouses Road to create a shared-use path, as well as establishing a safe walking connection to Kippielaw.
Carlops Road/Bog Road Junction, Penicuik A £140,975 grant will be allocated to improve safety at this junction. The project will include the installation of a new zebra crossing on Carlops Road and the tightening of the junction to address local concerns.
Sherwood Crescent, Bonnyrigg The final grant of £126,949 will be used to implement traffic calming measures and improve crossing facilities along Sherwood Crescent. This includes the installation of raised road tables, new crossing points, and pavement extensions.
Public consultations are currently underway for the projects in Penicuik and Bonnyrigg, with feedback being accepted until Friday, November 22nd.
Cllr Colin Cassidy, Depute Leader of Midlothian Council and Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "I am delighted that Midlothian Council has been successful in receiving three active travel funding awards from the Scottish Government.
"Communities in Easthouses, Penicuik and Bonnyrigg stand to benefit from proposed projects which will deliver safer and calmer active travel routes for residents, which is especially important around our school estates.
"Additionally, the installation of new crossing facilities and traffic calming measures can significantly boost the appeal of active travel, as well as helping the council achieve our net zero ambitions too.
"I look forward to all three projects being completed by the end of the current financial year."
