Glasgow to Create New Woodland And Tree Nursery

Construction News Image
Glasgow City Council is set to transform a derelict site in Cadder into a 15-hectare woodland. The new green space will provide valuable habitat for wildlife, recreational opportunities, and outdoor learning experiences for the local community.

The council has also secured funding to establish a tree nursery in the North East of the city. This nursery will cultivate native saplings for planting across Glasgow, while also creating training and employment opportunities through a social enterprise.

These initiatives are part of the city's ambitious Tree Plan, which aims to increase Glasgow's green canopy and contribute to its net-zero goals.

In the past year, the council has planted over 24,000 trees, surpassing its annual target. This achievement was made possible through partnerships with volunteers, schools, businesses, and environmental organisations.

The council is also prioritising the planting of trees with smaller leaves, such as birch, rowan, and hornbeam, on city streets. These trees are less likely to cause drainage issues associated with fallen leaves.

Councillor Angus Millar, City Convener for Climate, congratulated council staff and volunteers on the planting of over 24,000 trees in a year.

He said: "Work to increase the tree canopy and combat Climate Change has been progressing at pace across the city in the past year with the help of an array of partners and enthusiastic volunteers.

"Breathing new life into vacant and derelict land through tree planting will enhance and enrich communities by creating cherished greenspaces which could survive for hundreds of years."

Members of the public can also suggest locations for tree planting, volunteer to help with planting or buy a commemorative tree via the council's Tree Portal. It can be found here.

Plans are also in the pipeline to enable city residents to sponsor a tree in their own street or a favourite city location.
